Salahuddin Ayubi Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb (Kurdish: سەلاحەدینی ئەییووبی /Selahedînê Eyûbî; Arabic: صلاح الدين يوسف بن أيوب ‎ ; Turkish: Selahaddin Eyyûbî) (1137/1138 – 4 March 1193), better known in the Western world as Saladin, was the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria and the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. A Muslim of Kurdish origin, Saladin led the Muslim opposition to the European Crusaders in the Levant. At the height of his power, his sultanate included Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, Hejaz, Yemen and other parts of North Africa. Originally sent to Fatimid Egypt by his Zengid lord Nur ad-Din in 1163, Saladin climbed the ranks of the Fatimid government by virtue of his military successes against Crusader assaults on its territory and his personal closeness to the caliph al-Adid. He and his wife first met at the Department of Fine Art of the then- Institute Teknologi Mara (ITM). Mastura (his wife) was a painting major, whilst Tengku Sabri's focus was sculpture. They graduated in 1986 and married a year later. Tengku Sabri recalls: "At the time, I was living in Ulu Klang with my uncle and a few friends. In 1988, we returned to my hometown, Jerteh, in Terengganu." There, Tengku Sabri's father, a Tokoh Kraf Negara (Seni Ukir Halus) or National Craft Master (Fine Carving), would play a pivotal role in shaping some of his earliest works, notably the Teleng series featuring wooden deconstructions of the traditional Malay keris hilt.
